The Providence Adolescent Residential Treatment Program provides long-term treatment for 12-18 year old girls who have psychiatric disorders. Adolescents that need residential treatment have a history of failed outpatient treatment and at least one inpatient hospitalization for psychiatric reasons. Most adolescents who are in need of a residential program have severely low self-esteem and are having extreme difficulty in their relationships with parents other authority figures and peers. Our program is specifically structured to help adolescent girls who are struggling with the following problems: post traumatic stress disorder sexual and physical abuse dangerous risk-taking behaviors self-mutilation suicidal ideation poor anger management depression anxiety disorders ADD and learning disabilities.
Residential treatment is accessed when an adolescent is on an inpatient unit and the inpatient treatment determines that residential treatment is necessary. Outpatient therapists probation officers social workers from the Office of Children Services and other mental health care professionals may also contact the treatment team and recommend residential treatment.
Once an adolescent has been admitted to the residential program an interdisciplinary team works with each individual adolescent to develop a specific treatment plan to meet her individual needs. The interdisciplinary treatment team consists of the following professionals: a medical director master’s prepared therapists mental health specialists a psychiatric nurse a dietician an Anchorage School District teacher the clinical director the clinical supervisor and consulting clinicians. The treatment team delivers a full range of clinical and educational services. Each adolescent receives individual group therapy milieu intervention and family therapy. Family therapy is one of the most important aspects of residential treatment. We work closely with the family from the beginning of treatment integrating the whole support system in the therapy process. Family therapy helps prepare the family to support the positive changes the adolescent has made in treatment and helps all of the family members examine their own problems. Without adequate intervention families tend to repeat negative patterns of interaction that sabotage the gains the adolescent has made while in treatment.
The adolescent will benefit from a highly structured therapeutic milieu which operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Each adolescent is responsible for maintaining the living environment and earning privileges through a graduated level system. The environment is warm comfortable and structured. Structure on the unit includes daily routines community meetings school therapeutic groups and activities. During the course of treatment the students attend community activities theatrical performances concerts cultural events as well as participate in volunteer work. All of the activities provide our students with the opportunity to have successful experiences improve their self-esteem and enrich social understanding.
The program philosophy is based on the relational model. Relational theory proposes the source of psychological problems comes from not being able to create positive healthy connections with other people. Through the relational model the residential program promotes healing by teaching adolescents how to develop relationship skills. We provide a caring environment that promotes positive ways to engage in relationships. The program is designed to help adolescents recognize and build on their strengths and decrease behaviors that interfere with leading a healthy lifestyle. Adolescents will maintain their connections with family school and community while living in a nurturing safe environment. Our program aims not only to teach and support adolescents in the development of healthy coping skills but also to encourage the systems around the adolescent to grow and change. The program is structured to encourage expression of feelings effective communication and community responsibility through modeling and engaging in healthy relationships.
